Fundraiser:
11/16/19 Paint Fundraiser for Kalmo Refugee Support Group
About the cause
By coming to this Paint Nite you are supporting reunification of a Somali refugee family separated for 11 years. In 1990, Marwo Abdi (then 6 years old), her family, and many other Somali people were displaced by war. In the process of fleeing to Kenya, Marwo was separated from her family and her father was killed. Marwo lived in a refugee camp for 17 years, eventually reuniting with her surviving family in the camp. In 2008 Marwo came to Canada on a WUSC scholarship. But her mom, brother, and two cousins (including a 12-year-old) are still living in a refugee camp. Marwo describes this family separation as "agony". We are helping Marwo bring her family to live in Canada. All funds from this fundraiser will go to the family's medical and travel expenses incurred as part of this process. For more information about Kalmo or Marwo's family, see https://kalmovictoriabc.wordpress.com/
