Indian Chana Masala (Garbanzo Beans) and Puri (Fried Bread) - Vegan/Vegetarian

Ah, the cuisine of India! And the aroma of its spices! It made the Europeans salivate and their daring explorers risk their lives to find a sea route to India! That remarkable cuisine is now yours to create and enjoy through this class. 

The Punjabi Chana Masala, possibly the most popular dish ordered in an Indian restaurant, is a delicious vegetarian dish of the north Indian cuisine. This gluten-free, protein-packed dish is cooked in a tangy tomato-based sauce. We will also be making whole wheat flour puri - a deep-fried bread, to go with this finger-licking curry.  This class will be limited to 8 people for an intimate experience. 

Ingredients for Chana Masala

  • 2 cans garbanzo beans
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 medium onions (equivalent to 1 ½ cup finely chopped onions)
  • 2 medium tomatoes (equivalent to 1 ½ cups finely chopped tomatoes)
  • 1 to 2 green chilies (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons grated ginger
  • ¾ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ¾ to 1 tablespoons Chana masala or Cholé masala
  • ¾ teaspoon Garam Masala
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (to garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
  • Salt

Ingredients for Puri

· Whole wheat flour

· Oil for deep frying

· Salt

In addition to other utensils, you will need a rolling pin or equivalent, to make the puris and a pan for deep frying.
