Music & Comedy

This the second part of a three part unit on Jake Heggie's song cycle "Iconic Legacies: First Ladies at the Smithsonian."

American Composer Jake Heggie wrote a song cycle that focuses on the lives of four first ladies: Eleanor Roosevelt, Mary Todd Lincoln, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Barbara Bush.

In Part One I focused on songs one and two of the cycle based on events in the lives of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary Todd Lincoln. In this episode I will discuss and perform the pieces from events in the lives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Barbara Bush.

I will give a glance into how I analyze my music, text, and create an interpretation based on what I find in the music as well as from research into the lives of these women. This will be followed by with a performance of each piece and will be opened to a discussion with my audience to talk about what they felt and observed and learned and if they have any other questions.

Later on, Episode Four (Part 3) will be a capstone performance of the cycle in it's entirety and a look into the cycle's symbolism/musical impact as a whole.

You may reschedule or cancel tickets up to 8 hours before the event starts. Read our reschedule policy here.
